How do I configure target settings for a key metric?

Learn how to enable targets on a key metric, choose the period and level (user, team, department, company), and set up auto-copy and default targets for new users.

One-sentence answer: Go to Manage → Targets, click the three dots next to a key metric and choose Target Settings, then configure the period, level & rollup, and automation before saving.

Prerequisites: You need to be an Admin, or a Manager with permissions for the level you want to set targets on. The key metric must already exist under Organization → Key Metrics.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Go to Manage → Targets to open the Targets overview.

  2. Find the key metric you want to configure and click the three dots on the right.

  3. Choose Target Settings from the menu. (If the metric doesn't appear in the overview yet, click Add Target on Key Metric in the top-right corner and select the metric first.)

  4. Toggle on Should this Key Metric have a target? to reveal the configuration options

  5. Set the Period for the target (weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly).

  6. Under Level & Rollup, toggle on the level(s) where you want to input targets (User, Team, Department, Company). Levels you don't enable will be shown as Summed from users — a rollup of the level below.

  7. (Optional) Under Automation & Defaults, set What should be the default target for new users? so new users don't start at 0.

  8. (Optional) Toggle on Auto-copy targets to automatically carry targets over to the next period when none are set.

  9. Click Save.

What if this doesn't work?

Problem: I changed the period and my old targets look wrong.

Solution: Existing targets are converted to the new period where possible, but always
review them after a period change to confirm they still match what you intended.

Problem: I set a team target manually and now it doesn't update when I change user targets.

Solution: Editing a summed target breaks the rollup link. To restore automatic summing, delete the team target and the system will sum the user targets again.

Problem: I can't edit target settings on this metric:

Solution: The metric is likely inherited from a higher level. Target settings must be configured at the level where the key metric is defined, or by someone with permissions at that level.
