What are Competition Insights in SalesScreen, and how do they work?

Competition Insights segment users into top, middle, and bottom performers and compare total KPI impact between the current and previous period so admins can see who really drove the results of a competition.

Admins and Managers with access to Competition details

Prerequisites

  • You have access to Competitions in SalesScreen

  • The competition has results for both the current period and the previous period

How are top, middle, and bottom performers determined?

Users are segmented based on the KPI being competed on and their historical performance, not only the current competition.

  • If the competition period is shorter than 3 months

    • SalesScreen looks at 3 months of historical data for the chosen KPI, starting from the competition start date.

  • If the competition period is longer than 3 months

    • SalesScreen uses the previous competition period as the basis.

Segments

  • Top performers – users in the top 20% of performance on that KPI.

  • Bottom performers – users in the bottom 20%.

  • Middle performers – everyone else (middle 60%).

These segments are fixed for the duration of the competition; they are calculated before insights are shown.

What is “Overall Effect”?

Overall Effect shows how the total KPI value changed compared with the previous period.

  • It compares the total value in the competition period to the total value in the previous period (displayed at the top of the widget).

  • In simple terms: how many percent up or down the KPI is versus last period.

What does “Contribution” mean?

Contribution shows how much each segment (top, middle, bottom) contributed to the total KPI value during the competition.

  • It is based on raw KPI numbers in the competition period (for example revenue, deals, calls).

  • Ideally, if everyone contributed proportionally to their segment size:

    • Top = 20%, Middle = 60%, Bottom = 20%.

  • In reality, these numbers often differ and highlight:

    • Whether top performers are carrying the result, or

    • Whether middle/bottom segments are under‑ or over‑performing.

Will users change segments during the competition?

No.

  • Segments are determined before insights are calculated, based on previous period / historical data.

  • Users keep their top/middle/bottom label throughout the current competition.

  • Segment changes only happen between competitions, when new historical data is available.

Why don’t I see Competition Insights for my competition?

Competition Insights are available for most, but not all, competitions. The widget will not appear if:

  • There is no result in either:

    • The competition period, or

    • The previous comparison period.

  • The competition type is:

    • Executive competition

    • Legacy points competition

    • Average points competition

    • Scorecard competition

What if this doesn’t work?

I ran a competition, but the insights widget isn’t showing

  • Check if the competition type is one of the unsupported types above.

  • Make sure there is KPI data for both the current competition period and the previous period.

The segments don’t match what I expect from this competition’s results

  • Remember segments are based on historical performance, not just the current competition. A user can be in “Top performers” even if they under‑perform in this one competition, and vice versa.
